CFBL 1998, Year #9
The Grays Take 2nd Title In a "Year With No Playoffs"
THE GRAYS played solidly all season and waltzed to their second CFBL title.
New Rules: Major rule changes made it a different game in 1998. The Bonus Round was given a radical make-over, with each draft slot up for bids, and the playoff season, thanks to a horrid (for the scorer) 5-team playoff run-off the year before, was eliminated (payoffs to 7 spots) in favor of a 21-game season – one of the worst CFBL decisions ever amde. Relief saves were upgraded from 3 to 4 points.
team (bonus pick)
Grays (nee Homeboys): Griffey ($100)
Casuals: Walker ($60)
Devil Rays (nee Pomegranates): Piazza ($50)
Coasters (nee Black Sox): Belle ($30)
Clubbers: Alex Rodriguez ($10)
River Rats: Bonds
YOUNG GUNS: Juan Gonzalez ($5)
Cactus Scouts: Salmon ($5)
Season: THE GRAYS (nee Homeboys, later Dogs), riding McGwire's magical 70-HR season, clinched first place before the end of the season, providing the most boring finish ever in CFBL history. The Devil Rays easily claimed 2nd, and the River Rats would have missed the playoffs for the first time in league history if there had been any playoffs to miss.
Final Standings:
Grays: 14-7
Devil Rays: 13-8
Casuals: 11-10
Young Guns: 11-10
Cactus Scouts: 10-11
River Rats: 9-12
Clubbers: 9-12
Coasters: 7-14
